Havana International Film Festival 2023

The 44rd edition of the Havana International Film Festival (Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano)—one of the most anticipated film events in the region—opens December 8 to 17 in cinemas across the city.

The slogan of this year’s film festival integrates the phrase “Green Light,” which expresses forward, movement, and possibility, with one of the most used terms in film production: “Action!

The call for entries opened March 21. Submissions closed on August 15. In total, 1,795 films, scripts and posters of 2022-2023 were submitted including feature films, documentary, short films, animation, first works, unpublished screenplays and posters for competition. The official selection will be made public in the days prior to the film event.

The Havana International Film Festival promotes cinematic works that contribute to and highlight Latin American and Caribbean cultural identity, enriching and affirming that identity. The focus is contemporary world cinema emerging from the region.

Apart from the CORAL awards in many genres, there is the FIPRESCI Award from the International Federation of Film Critics, and the SIGNIS Award from the World Catholic Association for Communication Collateral Awards. Other prizes originate from Cuban and foreign institutions for film.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture, Festival International Del Nuevo Cine, and ICAIC. Corporate sponsorship and patronage sources include the Embassies of Switzerland, Spain, the Government of Spain, INCAA, ACINE, CNAC, Accion Cultura Espanola, COPA Airlines, Fondo de Solidaridad para Proyectos Innovadores, Sociedades Civiles, Francofonía y Desarrollo Humano (FSPI), La Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV (EICTV), NIHAO53, Fundacion SGAE. In addition, the following companies sponsor the festival: Leke Group, Hotel Nacional de Cuba, Countigo, Ciego Montero, Kelonik, ETECSA, INCAA, and Aracne.

The opening gala night is on December 8 at the Charles Chaplin Cinema at 7:00 p.m.

Accreditation to the Festival:

Foreign journalists can apply for accreditation on the official website or at the Festival office in the Festival House.
